Eating tour of Porto

So over summer, we headed to Portugal for our summer holiday, in the last few days, we were in Porto, and I made it my mission to find the best sweets in Porto. So I'm going to give you a run down of what you should do if you have a day in Porto, including the best sights to see and of course all the food!

In the morning, we headed to the Ribeira, which is the scenic front of the river Douro, full of little market stalls, and a great view of the Dom Luis bridge. The stalls sell everything from fruit and veg, to Portuguese souvenirs like key rings, and tea towels!

From the front, it's about a 10 minute walk up to Leitaria da Quinta do Paço, an little shop, famous for its eclairs. We tried the lemon, toffee and classic and they were delicious. The icings were super sweet, but the cream was light and balanced out the flavours. Also a great view of a few shops and arty buildings.

Next we made a quick trip up the Praca Da Liberdade (Liberdade square), the original project for the urbanisation of the area. It features a statue of Peter IV riding a horse and holding the Constitution that he had fought to protect during the Liberal Wars.

A short walk from here is a fantastic sandwich shop called Conga. Be prepared to stand at a bar, shoulder to shoulder with locals, eating a greasy sandwich, but nevertheless, it was beautiful. (They do have seating, but were full when we went).

Next stop was Sao Bento Station, an amazing, tiled station. The station depicts the Battle of Arcos de Valdevez, D. João I in Oporto with his fiancé and the Conquest of Ceuta and much more. Each tile was hand painted, and perfectly placed to create a perfect scene.

Our final stop, is an ice cream shop called Cremosi where I ordered a crepe with black cherry ice cream and M&M's. While the crepe and the ice cream were delicious, if I went again, I'd give the M&M's a miss!

In the evening you should definitely head over the river. We went on the lower level to the other side, then wandered around the port cellars for a while, before heading up to the monument and finally making our way back on the top level of the bridge. You will get excellent views of Porto from the viewpoint at the top.

So there you go, my day trip in Porto, if you have more days to spend, the beaches are also lovely so I'm told. If you have any questions, or if you would recommend something I missed, be sure to leave a comment below!!
